Heritage living in a National Park

On the historic grounds of the Missiehuis monument (1924), Equilis transformed a former missionary institute into a new residential neighborhood surrounded by greenery. Located on the edge of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and just minutes from Haarlem, the project blends heritage conservation and contemporary housing. Contemporary apartments are integrated within the monumental building, and surrouned by new houses and pavilions. Equilis took special care to integrate all the designs seamlessly with the park landscape.

Where heritage meets sustainable

By combining gas-free living, nearly zero-energy standards and the reuse of demolition materials, Missiehuis exemplifies how obsolete heritage sites can be transformed into living spaces and sustainable places for modern happy communities.

KEY ESG
HIGHLIGHTS

Although the Equilis Happiness Performance internal label was not yet applied at the time, the project demonstrates strong ESG ambitions that would qualify as Exemplary today:

Heritage & Landscape

  • Conservation of the Missiehuis monument and its transformation into 41 apartments.
  • Creation of 39 new houses and special dwellings (3 chapel houses and a detached pavilion) aligned with the monument’s style.
  • Preservation of existing trees and integration of new planting, green roofs, and landscaped public areas.

Energy & Resource Efficiency

  • All homes are 100% gas-free, powered by a collective underground thermal energy storage system combined with heat pumps.
  • New buildings designed to meet NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards and reached outstanding A++++ energy labels.
  • Reuse of recovered bricks and materials from demolition in the renovation of the monument.

Community & Inclusion

  • A mix of housing types, including 16 social apartments, ensures diversity and accessibility.
  • Public events such as the symbolic first tree planting foster engagement with local residents and authorities.
  • Easy access to sustainable mobility: 400 m from Driehuis station, 13 minutes by train to Haarlem, 33 minutes to Amsterdam.
